Abstract

The current work extracted the chitosan from the waste of mushroom crops for the first time in Iraq. The chemical process was adopted for demineralization with 2M HCl, deproteinization with 2M NaOH, and decolorization. Also, the refluxing process with 60% NaOH for chitin was applied. The XRD result shows two peaks around 2θ =10° and 20°, indicating the ordered crystalline structure of chitosan. The FT-IR spectrum showed specific bands of chitosan at 3327.97, 2918.71, and 1645.95 cm-1. Also, the FE-SEM results show a smooth, dense, and non-porous surface. The viability results on white blood cells (WBCs) show the stimulation of proliferation, which reaches 107% at (20 μg/mL). Genotoxicity results at (5 μg/mL) were BI% (62.63333) and MI% (1.54), which proved the non-genotoxic effect of the extracted chitosan. At (15 μg/mL), the total chromosomal aberrations slightly increased by (0.14) while the hemolysis of the extracted chitosan was (4.07%) which is an accepted level. The extracted chitosan was applied as a coating material by the EPD process on Ti6Al4V alloy. With a brown color and thickness of 22.7 μm, besides adhesion force of -0.8144 nN and homogeneous distribution of Young's modulus, the extracted chitosan shows interesting possibilities for significant potential in bio applications performance.
